In a recent interview, 水島精二 / Seiji Mizushima, director of Gundam 00, spoke of the tremendous pressures of creating a Gundam series, the constant criticism made of the show online, and even how the Internet’s “knee jerk” negativity lowers the creative motivation of the production staff.

The lengthy interview was conducted as part of Nikkei Business Online’s anime column. The article is nearly three pages long, and is only the first part of the interview posted thus far.

Below is an abridged summary, with the interviewer’s questions in bold:

The creation of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 can be called a monumental project, as it is a continuation of the epochal Mobile Suit Gundam series, a series embraced by people ranging from 10 year olds to those in their 50s…

Honestly, I was extremely happy (to become the series’ director). As I am in my early 40s, I was part of the generation that was brought up watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

I was not very familiar with the details of the Gundam franchise, but ever since entering the anime production business I’ve wanted to work on a Gundam show at least once. I think a lot of people (in the industry) feel the same way.

Right now, it is an honor to be in charge of a Gundam series, but on the other hand it does also feel like putting one’s hands into the fire at times.

Fire? What do you mean by that?

Creating a new Gundam series entails a large “risk” for the creator. Since it is such a major title, the creative staff is not free to exercise much freedom in the show’s creation, and the staff must always be on their guard.

Do you feel a lot of pressure from Gundam fans?

We continuously hear from the fans things like “Gundam isn’t like that! This Gundam is no good!”

I see. It must be a lot like in the automobile industry, where a big name company changes an old model and fans of the old model are distraught.

Certainly the expectations are set very high for such a big property (like Gundam).

Much like what would happen when a change is made to a famous car model, voices of “No, I’d prefer it to be like this…” are heard. We in the production staff would prefer to hear positive comments, but that isn’t the case.

The “knee jerk” reactions are more like “What the hell is this?” or “That’s uncool.”

Why exactly do you think they’re “knee jerk” reactions?

Well, they’re not criticisms based on close inspection of the product, or by closely following the story, but rather by merely looking at pictures (of the show) and superficial appearance.

Right now, the Internet is a place where commentary of the series travels extremely fast. Whether it is positive or negative, talk travels quickly there.

The people that want to flame the show approached the series right from the start from the vector of “I hate it”, and on the Internet they can find other sympathetic people with which to search for points of shared dislike. They’ve already gotten on the “flow of hate”, and so there’s really no helping it.

Are you really aware of all the Internet discussions?

Yes. A lot of the production staff is aware of the comments, and so the Internet flaming does lower their motivation, make no mistake about that.

Does that sort (of criticism) tend to only happen on the Internet?

It’s more obvious on the Internet. More so than on blogs, it’s especially prevalent on anonymous bulletin boards.

Those knee jerk reactions don’t really go up on personal blogs, but more on these bulletin boards where tons of people gather and can post under anonymous pseudonyms. A lot of flaming directed towards films, books, musical artists and the like can be found there. I sometimes think those people simply dislike anything that’s selling well.

Thus, I think instead of calling them “Anti-Gundam 00″, it might be better to call them “Anti-Popular.”

I think the approach of not simply watching the show for enjoyment, but rather to criticize it from the very beginning is something that is especially noticeable on the Internet. On the medium of the Internet, the sentiments of animosity towards major works is very strong, I feel.

The interview does continue on for over another page, but no new topic is introduced and the remainder is mostly composed of Mizushima discussing Internet anonymity, and the possible explanations for what drives Internet users to post negative comments.

- Setsuna feels considerably indebted/obligated to Saji and Louise.
- Lockon’s dying wish once again allows Setsuna to stand up.
- Whatever the true intentions of the plan, (Setsuna) doesn’t want peace for the sake of the plan, but for the sake of those who are living right now. In other words, he’s starting to understand Marina and co.’s feelings, but if that [feeling?] isn’t dulled by his determination it’s good, but….

Tieria:
Influence phrase: “I AM human!” (D’AWWWW)

- The truth he learned from Regene shook his raison d’etre to the core. But, supported by his CB comrades’ words, he declares Regene and co. a “new distortion.” As long as they* exist, Tieria can exist as a “human.”
- Tieria’s determination to be hostile toward the Innovators is thanks to the late Lockon.
- It’s not clear whether Tieria was seriously influenced by humans in the last 4 years. But, precisely because of that “you’re quite human” [comment], he rejects the Innovators merciless way of doing things. Something that doesn’t understand humans should not lead humans.

- Will I really be able to protect Marie?
- Maybe she (Souma) will appear at some point.
- In addition to protecting [people], Allelujah will be able to grow a great deal.

Lyle:
Influence phrase: “[Staying] true to my name, I’ll snipe it!”

- Neil’s reason for fighting was “my family’s revenge.” Lyle knows about that, and laughs with a feeling of self depreciation. [Unlike] his brother, for whom even above changing the world his personal grudge took precedence, [Lyle] never brooded over things like that. He regained his respect for his brother in that moment.
- CB’s members superimpose Neil’s image on Lyle, but for Lyle he [felt] constrained by such high expectations.
- Moreso than CB, he’s intoxicated with a sense of belonging to Katharon. (? I’m really not that confident about this line)

{Next chunk is an interview with Michinori Chiba, the character designer. Finally the mystery of Tieria’s cleavage is solved–also I think I’m gonna start skipping around in the interview since he’s talking about stuff in the first season in the next chunk and just not so interesting stuff (in terms of spoilers/whatever). I’ll go back to it later:}

Chiba’s interview is loaded with spoilers. Just the places that caught my attention:
- The creation of Tieria’s crossdressing outfit was readily apparent in Chiba’s character chart drawings. It was an open-chested design from the beginning, but that seemed like a bad idea for a variety of [reasons], so I added a thin layer to cover the chest. And from there, the shadow of cleavage was added (by the main staff) under/on the thin fabric….
Moreover, although it appeared that way in the preview for episode 7, it was erased after that. (lol)
- Wang along with Louise from now on will be developed into much larger roles.
- I drew Sergei’s meditative pose in S2 ep 7. {I dunno exactly} Although it was Marie’s episode, we saw things from the other side [too] and for Sergei it was an episode where he settled on his resolve. {and I’m not sure what to make of the last sentence}

{paraphrasing some of this because I’m lazy}

- Mizushima wanted the world leaders to resemble real world leaders.
- Setsuna is hard to draw but because it’s difficult it’s worth doing. Because Setsuna’s facial expressions are so delicate/subtle, you have to draw it just right, I think.
Setsuna’s a character who’s undergone through all sorts of incredible experiences, but I want to draw Setsuna’s feelings as much as possible....

Espero, que además de atrasada voy con los athena no seinto y... no van muy veloces.

Sobre el spoiler, no entiendo de qué va, pero...

Gracias, ahora edito, aunque debo reconocer algo que me pasa con Gundam, si bien en conjunto me parece que funciona perfecto, los diseños de los mechas nunca han sido de mi total agrado, aunque las distintas versiones de los Flag son muy sexies. Por cierto, las screencaps de MS igloo me dan como que otra perspectiva de ver a los mecha de esta serie, hasta me gustan.

Sobre lo que dicen de un Remake, pues no sé, los fans más acérrimos no gustan de algo nuevo, pues presagian que pueda ser malo (tengan o no razón) y siempre claman por remakes o que tomen alguna novela apegada al UC.

No se si es requisito, pero en razon de entrar al club incluyo q son mis mechas favoritos... no he podido seguir las sagas por completo, x razones un poco complicadas, sin embargo he leido de todas un poco y etc...

Tambien aprovecho para mencionar algo acerca de una propuesta q puse en el tema donde se propone el foro mecha y vi que se menciona que se puede crear con la cuenta bot de este club... pues me gustaria decir q seria algo muy agradable... si logramos crear dicho club y luego comenzar a invitar miembros al mismo... luego seria mas facil hacer a ellos llegar nuestra propuesta del Mecha-Foro XD...

En fin, en verdad me gustaria estar en este club ya que no tengo otro lugar en el DZ donde hablar sobre Gundam 00, ni nada de lo q se sobre Gundams(ya dije q son mis Mechas Favoritos), asi que espero pronta aceptacion y de no ser posible mi ingreso una pronta respuesta... XD

Tambien aprovecho para mencionar algo acerca de una propuesta q puse en el tema donde se propone el foro mecha y vi que se menciona que se puede crear con la cuenta bot de este club... pues me gustaria decir q seria algo muy agradable... si logramos crear dicho club y luego comenzar a invitar miembros al mismo... luego seria mas facil hacer a ellos llegar nuestra propuesta del Mecha-Foro XD... En fin, en verdad me gustaria estar en este club ya que no tengo otro lugar en el DZ donde hablar sobre Gundam 00, ni nada de lo q se sobre Gundams(ya dije q son mis Mechas Favoritos), asi que espero pronta aceptacion y de no ser posible mi ingreso una pronta respuesta...
